A Change That’s Real

A lot of what I think about and articulate through my writing is the idea of change, and the actions necessary out of us as humans to truly implement change in our lives.

The word itself, change, holds all sorts of subjective definitions and worldly applications, doesn’t it?

Physical, mental, spiritual change. Changing our habits, our geographic location, our occupation … all of which I’m no stranger to at this point in my brief time here on this earth – 25 years, to be exact.

All of this can become overwhelming and difficult to interpret, depending upon how you choose to look at it. That said, at the root of it all I’ve recognized that all change is tied together in some way, shape or form. The way it will manifest is all-too-real in so many ways.

I equate it to the “domino effect.” For better, or for worse, this is true.

Change resulting in net-positives, comes as a biproduct of domino after domino falling in a perfect sequence.

The same can be said of change that results in just the opposite – net-negative consequences.

Simple enough, sure. It’s not rocket science, when assessed at face value, but can be, as previously mentioned, overwhelming and confusing when we don’t immediately reap the fruits of change put into action.

Our innate human nature yearns for immediate gratification. When we don’t get it, we start to lose focus, and we may even pull a domino straight from the equation. What happens then?

The process is broken.

How do we avoid this? To keep from halting any process from being made simply because we don’t see the change within a specific window of time? It’s not easy, but possible nonetheless.

In recognizing that its all tied together, all shapes and sizes of change, that is, we can better come to grips with the fact that one thing will (eventually) lead to another. The decision to change our habits will (eventually) result in a change in our well-being. Our mood, our physical fitness, even our appearance.

I use this example because of a somewhat startling and surprising realization i’d come to just a few weeks back.

As I’ve labored on about at great lengths through this platform, where I stand today is leaps and bounds from where I found myself just a few years ago. My worldview, my set of habits, my overall love and admiration for life has increased dramatically in a really profound way. This has been more than apparent to me and to those within my circle.

What wasn’t quite so apparent to me, however, was the tangible change that had taken place via my overall appearance, somewhat unbeknownst to me. This surely comes as a bi-product of many smaller things that had changed within my life – the aforementioned dominos.

The process is, as cliche as it may sound, not a sprint but a marathon. The major changes visible to the masses don’t just come to be at will, but over a span of time that has no set parameters.

It takes effort, perseverance, and perhaps most importantly, faith in something greater than yourself. A belief that in due time, the dominos start to fall in droves. The pieces to the puzzle begin finding their place. The change becomes real. It’s undeniable, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Stay the path. Don’t pull the dominos. The change will come.

Forge on.
