Getting The Train Back On The Tracks

Admittedly, I’m (gracefully) stealing this concept from another like-minded individual who shares pieces of writing along with a newsletter which are centered around very similar topics to that of my own.

Coincidentally, I plugged this outlet – Virgin’s Newsletter – on this week’s Friday Fire Newsletter.

In his most recent work, Matt describes the value behind intentional constraints in your life. He brings to light the purpose they can ultimately serve when applied properly, and how we’ve come to see them as quite the opposite of what they actually are.

Here’s an example that he used, which I think is excellent:

“Consider the train, capable of immense speed and force … deliberately constrained to a fixed rail system.

But this constraint is the secret to the train’s power.

Without the rails to direct it, all that power would lead to chaos. The train would quickly veer off course, crash, and not move any further.

It’s the rails that give the train purpose – allowing it to channel its energy over a long distance.”

-Matt Virgin, Virgin’s Newsletter

Though a pretty basic comparison, I think it’s outstanding. This is why –

What happens to a train when there is a hitch in its rails? Something less than ideal.

And when there are no tracks at all?

What does this make you think about?

For me, it causes me to reflect on my own day-to-day. Are there times where I get side tracked and caught in a standstill or “off the rails,” so to speak?

Of course there are. If you say otherwise, you’re lying to yourself.

This concept is closely tied to many that I’ve touched on in the past and really stands as the overall theme for what I’m aiming to preach through my various rambling blog posts.

The act of defining what is most important to you, and placing actions in accordance to said priorities is a good place to start. These values serve as the rails that keep the train on the straight and narrow, ultimately providing the power and momentum necessary.

In the same vein, consider setting the standards by which you intend to live your life and better yet setting the stage (or, the table) for whatever is ahead of you. What sense of guidance and power might this provide for your endeavors toward what you deem as your life’s overall purpose.

What is that purpose? Where are you headed?

Are you actively building the tracks necessary to get the train where it needs to go? Without them, where might you end up?

Food for thought on this Good Friday.

Have a great Easter Weekend to those who celebrate! GodSpeed.
