I hear it all the time.
I see it play out on the daily.
We all have, at some point in time, heard the words from someone we know: “I wish…”
“I wish I could run like you do.”
“I wish I was more of a morning person.”
“I wish I could lose weight.”
These are just a few, of many that have crossed my path, spewed from the mouths of people from all walks of life. Folks that I know well, and some that I’ve never met once in my life.
It pains me to hear those wishes, for things entirely within one’s control. To wish for something entirely attainable.
I’ve reflected on these statements, and the motives behind them, for a long time. Do people really mean them? Honestly?
Or, are they attention seeking? An attempt at gaining some sort of empathy from others?
Now, don’t get this twisted – there are plenty of things in this world in which we have no control over. Things that have occurred in our lives that we wish hadn’t. People we wish were still here with us, a war that we wish would come to a halt, or the all-too-common wish that we could control the negative actions of others.
These things are real, and outside of our circle of control entirely.
These things are not what I’m referring to.
Not one bit.
That weight you “wish” you could lose, or the hobby that you “wish” you’d pick back up – whose hands are those in? Who, or what stands in the way of these things becoming a reality?
Who is stopping you from waking up earlier? Or from eating a cleaner diet?
Who keeps you from taking that career leap? What is holding you back from a strong relationship with your partner?
Hint: it’s not a trick question. It’s you.
No one, but you.
Of course, that is a tough pill to swallow – a hard thing to admit – but, it’s true. These things, that are within our circle of control, are completely conceivable – no one but the person in the mirror is in charge.
You’re in the driver seat. It’s up to you where you go from here.
Stop wishing. Start doing.
