I’ve been rambling on for weeks now about the concept of time. The importance of getting up “early” – whatever that means for your personal schedule – along with the necessity behind making time for what is imperative to the life you know and love.
Why am I so caught up on time?
Why is it at the forefront of my mind, and so easily transferred to written form?
It’s rather straightforward – because, at this stage in my life, time is everything.
As of late
For the better part of this 2023 summer, I worked for a lawn care company. As someone who isn’t well-suited for any sort of sedentary day-to-day, it’s best that I keep myself busy throughout the summer months. As a bonus; I genuinely enjoy lawn care and turf management.
Coming as no surprise to myself or anyone who knows me well: I enjoyed the work, and learned a significant amount in the process.
That said, I knew where I’d rather be.
With just a couple of weeks until the kickoff of the new school year, I decided to cut my “summer gig” short, to spend some quality time with my family. Though maybe a miniscule decision in the eyes of most – it has served to be one of the greatest I’ve ever made.
Waking up early to cover my miles for the day, followed up by breakfast and coffee with the girls. Then, typically, a walk around the neighborhood. A “wherever the wind blows us” approach for the large chunk of the given day, capped off with a good dinner and some time to read and to write, to talk and to laugh.
What seems, I’m sure, like an ordinary day to anyone reading these words, proves to be something much more.
The sound of my daughter’s laugh. The warmth behind the presence of my wife – my best friend. That grounded feeling that can’t be replicated outside of our home.
In a world full of a billion distractions, with a lifestyle that has been jam-packed to the brim by design, no time is better spent than time at home with the people I love most.
Time can be spent however you choose. It can build you up and it can just as menacingly tear you down. Some time lasts forever while some seems to fade in an instant. Most of all, time is limited, no matter who you are – spend it wisely.
